Landscape professionals are actively seeking to use more native trees and plants in their designs and projects, responding to environmental needs and increasing client interest. It is common to see projects specified with dozens of different native species and tens of thousand of native plants. But all too often, the visionary landscape professional is disappointed to find that the trees or plants are not available in the sizes or quantities needed. Why does this happen? What can landscape professionals do about this ongoing challenge, and how can they work with the native plant industry to better secure the native plant inventory they seek?

This course dives into the many issues associated with sourcing native trees and plants, what professionals need to know about sourcing natives and how to better communicate and prepare that design visions can be realized. Multiple instructors representing the full horticultural supply chain, from large native trees and shrubs, to smaller evergreen shrubs and herbaceous plants, and groundcovers and aquatics, will participate in discussing the unique supply challenges they face. Landscape professionals will gain deeper insight into the challenges of the native plant supply chain and how they might plan and respond to unexpected but not unusual shortages.
