This course is an outdoor workshop involving faculty guided tours of two ongoing, multi-year native plant horticulture and landscape research projects involving native plant wildflower gardens and native tree health in urban landscaping. This research is directly relevant to attendees who are increasingly being asked to design native landscapes and then experiencing a disconnect at the maintenance phase.

One tour will review and discuss the results of replicated plantings with different establishment and maintenance treatments for 24 native wildflower and grass species. Attendees will gain insight into the challenges of establishing and maintaining these species in a low input landscape, and which maintenance protocols may be most promising for the longterm success of their garden designs.

The other tour will review and discuss findings from examinations of the impact of irrigation delivery and root preparation, restrictive irrigation ordinances, soil amendments, the size of planting spaces and the space between plantings for four widely used native tree species. Attendees can apply this information to their tree maintenance specifications and guidance to better ensure the long-term success of the trees they specify for urban landscapes.
