Marco Island Makeover: from Manicured to Natural

Auditorium

TOPICS COVERED

South Florida, especially the Marco Island – Naples region, is high style. Fortunately, native plants can be successfully used to satisfy a wide range of landscape aesthetics, from naturalistic to formal, while still providing their vital ecosystem services.

This session presents an award-winning Marco Island home landscape makeover, where a boring, turf-dominant landscape was transformed to a native plant dominant functioning ecosystem in the suburbs. The resulting transformation is highly functional and attractive, and works well in a neighborhood of traditionally planted and manicured landscapes. Attendees will see the progression from lawn and clipped hedges with few to no flowers, to a diverse landscape with lots of opportunities to invite desirable pollinators and wildlife, along with color and interest all year plus a soft, inviting feel. Eryk will discuss and provide a list of plant species selected, along with the successes and challenges encountered for this award-winning landscape.

Attendees will learn how to use native plants and ecological design concepts in ways that work with more traditional landscape styles.
