Over the past 40 years, FANN growers have brought over 1000 Florida native plant species and varieties to market. While this sounds like an impressive number, it represents only a third of the state’s actual native floral diversity. In addition, of the 1000 or so species that have been introduced, only about a couple hundred can be found in any regularity or quantity in the native plant trade. Many species are specialty items produced for a restoration project and lacking sufficient market interest, they may no longer be available, or may come and go with irregular demand. Irregular demand and supply has characterized the native plant market for decades, and while demand steadily increases, there continues to be a fundamental inability to meet the demand with the current supply, both on the landscape construction side of the market as well as the end garden consumer.
For the past ten years, FANN has been tracking “new native plant” introductions, in large part to honor the efforts of our dedicated growers, who pursue these plants with little assistance, knowledge or research from others. In this class, horticulture and landscape professionals will learn about 24 underutilized native plant species, why they are of interest, and how they might be used in garden and landscape applications. In some cases, little is known and trialing is both needed and invited. With greater awareness, comes greater demand and supply to meet that demand. Instructors will use a combination of live plant specimens and photographs to present their selected species.
